What does a private GP cost in London? At a glance

ConsultationMedian
Standard consultation£110
Extended consultation£149
Video consultation£72.50

One price per clinic: its lowest standard (non-member, non-follow-up) fee. Sample = priced clinics.

The median is the middle price: half the clinics charge less and half charge more. It is a better guide than an average because a handful of very expensive practices would otherwise pull the figure up. The range runs from the lowest to the highest published fee, including “from” prices.

“Standard” means each clinic’s own standard appointment, and clinics do not agree on its length: some sell 15 minutes and others 20 or 30. Part of the gap between the cheapest and dearest fee is simply a longer appointment, so check the minutes on each clinic profile.

What a private GP consultation fee usually covers

The headline fee pays for the appointment itself: time with a GMC-registered GP, a physical examination where one is needed, and the GP’s advice. A private prescription or a referral letter is often written within that fee, though some clinics charge for letters.

These are normally charged on top:

  • Medication. A private prescription is paid for at the pharmacy at the pharmacy’s own price.
  • Blood tests and other laboratory work.
  • Vaccinations and travel medicine.
  • Medical reports, fitness-to-work notes, and insurance forms.
  • Follow-up appointments, unless the clinic says otherwise.

Clinics differ on all of these, so read the fee page linked from each clinic profile before you book.

Standard vs extended consultations

Most clinics sell at least two appointment lengths. In the directory the median standard consultation is £110 and the median extended consultation is £149.

A standard slot suits a single, well-defined concern. A longer slot gives room for several issues or a complicated history. Appointment lengths are not standardised between clinics, so compare the minutes as well as the price: each clinic profile shows the duration next to the fee.

Video consultations: how do the prices compare?

The median video consultation in the directory is £72.50, against £110 for a standard in-person appointment. Video fees start from £30.

A video appointment cannot include a physical examination, so the GP may ask you to come in afterwards. See London private GPs offering video consultations.

Same-day appointments: do you pay more?

Among clinics that offer same-day appointments, the median standard fee is £89 (24 clinics). Among clinics that do not, it is £120 (76 clinics).

This compares the two groups’ published standard fees. It does not capture urgent-booking surcharges, which a small number of clinics add; where one applies it is on the clinic’s own fee page. See same-day private GPs in London.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much does a private GP appointment cost in London?
Across the 100 priced London clinics in the CheckGP directory (clinics with a published standard fee), a standard private GP consultation costs between £70 and £310, with a median of £110. Prices are taken from each clinic's own fee page; each clinic page shows when they were last checked.
  • What is the cheapest private GP in London?
The lowest standard consultation fee currently in the CheckGP directory is £70. The cheapest clinics are listed on this page with links to their full fee schedules. A lower headline fee can mean a shorter appointment, so compare the consultation length as well as the price.
  • How much more does a longer private GP appointment cost?
The median extended consultation in the directory is £149, against £110 for a standard one. Appointment lengths differ between clinics, so check how many minutes each fee buys.
  • Is a video consultation cheaper than seeing a private GP in person?
Usually. The median video consultation in the directory is £72.50, against £110 for a standard in-person appointment. Video fees start from £30.
  • Are private GP prices regulated?
No. Private clinics in the UK set their own fees, which is why prices for a similar appointment vary so widely. Clinics providing GP services in England are regulated by the Care Quality Commission for quality and safety, not for price.
  • Does the consultation fee include prescriptions and tests?
Usually not. The consultation fee covers the appointment itself. Medication on a private prescription is paid for at the pharmacy, and blood tests, vaccinations, and medical letters are normally charged separately. Each clinic's fee page lists its extras.
  • Can I see a private GP and stay registered with my NHS GP?
Yes. Seeing a private GP does not affect your NHS registration, and you do not need a referral to book a private GP appointment.
  • Where do these prices come from?
Each price is taken from the clinic's own published fee schedule, and each clinic page shows when it was last checked. Member-only, subscription and follow-up prices are excluded so the figures reflect what a new one-off patient pays. The methodology page explains the process in full.
